Winter Sound School: DJ School

  • HOTSHOTS Footscray (map)

Have you ever been to a club or a rave and seen a DJ so good they made the night special? What about one so bad that you just wanted to bail on the night right there? What are they actually doing? Are they doing anything at all? Can you do that?

You probably can, and if you want to, you should. Whether you want to play a set at a friend's party and share your musical obsessions with friends in new and interesting ways, play in clubs and put on your own nights and build your own vision of a better night out, put on raves in squats and warehouses where everybod's welcome, make mixes for yourself to recontextualise your favourite music, or use these easy-to-learn skills as an accessible jumping-off point to start remixing and producing your own electronic music, you probably can, and if you want to, you should.

Over two hours, you'll familiarise yourself with some of the technology used by contemporary DJs, learn basic skills to mix tracks, as well as talking about related skills like selection, and understanding how tracks pair well, and how to pair tracks that don't. We'll be focusing on techniques and skills that are broadly applicable, whether you've got the money for fancy gear or not. We'll also be talking about our personal histories as DJs, and where queerness fits into the history of DJing as a pratice.
